How the pitch stays put
Simply playing a file faster raises its pitch and produces the classic chipmunk effect. This tool uses the ffmpeg atempo filter, which slices the waveform and overlaps the pieces so the duration changes while the pitch does not. Rates beyond 2x are applied in several stages so even extreme settings hold together.
Which speed to pick
1.25x is barely noticeable and fine for everyday listening. 1.5x is followable once you are used to it and suits reviewing lectures and meetings. 2x works for skimming. Going the other way, 0.75x helps with dictation and 0.5x with transcribing music or checking pronunciation.
Why not just use the player?
Most players can speed up playback, but the file itself is unchanged. This tool writes a new file at the new speed, so it plays the same way on devices without a speed control and for anyone you share it with.
Frequently asked questions
Does changing speed hurt the sound?
Up to about 1.5x it is hard to notice anything. At extremes such as 0.5x or 2x the time-stretching can add a faint metallic ring.
Can I change only the pitch?
No — this page changes speed only, and it deliberately leaves the pitch alone.
Can I speed up a video?
